Beer culture in S. Korea is about to change.

September 24th, 2009 1 comment

I came across this the other day (Sarah kindly translated it for me) on the Korea Microbrewery Association. This is huge news! Starting next year, the production requirements to sell bottled beer in Korea will be drastically reduced. This is going to open the doors to many potential breweries. Current brewpubs will be able to finally sell their beer off site and in bottles. I’m sure that other small scale breweries will start to pop up as well.

For discussion, this post is mirrored in the Homebrew Community Forums.

Making way for a third beer company…the government lightens the permission standards starting next year.

To currently enter the beer brewing industry you can get permission if you are able to produce 3.7 million bottles (500㎖) a year. This is going to become easier starting next year. So a third beer company can appear in domestic beer market that is now divided between Hite and OB.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and National Tax Service agreed with each other to lighten standard of permission for beer brewing industry to promote domestic beer industry. They decided to prepare the liquor tax law amendment by the first half of next year.

According to present liquor tax law, if you want to get permission to enter the beer manufacturing industry you should be able to ferment and produce 3.7million bottles(500㎖) per year. From 2002 government allowed small-scale stores to brew beer called “House Beer”. Now there are about 60 brew pubs around the country, but they are limited to sell beer only at their pub.

The Mifaff interested said, “We’re trying to lower the threshold of beer market to improve our poor domestic liquor industry competitiveness and raise it to export industry. And we expect that if we eased the standard of brewing, someone could open beer company with little capital and be possible to have specialized local brewing like Germany”.

Government has policy that benchmarking Japan’s case related to these new standards. The Japanese government gives permission for brewing if someone has a facility which can produce over 120 thousands bottles of beer or sake or soju per year. The Mifaff interested said “We have a plan to lower the standard to be comparable to Japan.”, hinting that they are considering to lower the minimum limit for beer brewing industry permission to around 100,000 bottles. In this case there could be various domestic small-scale beer brands compared to Hite.

The government is also considering easing the standard of permission for brewing Soju, Sake, etc. As of now you can get permission for brewing Soju if you can produce over 360,000 bottles(360㎖) per year and for Sake you need to produce over 18,000bottles(330㎖) per year.

Oktoberfest 2009

September 21st, 2009 2 comments

This years Oktoberfest kicked off just the other day, the 19th to be more specific. Unfortunately, I have yet to make it there but I wouldn’t be a true beer lover if I didn’t dream about making the journey. I will make it there some day!!

I was just reading up on it and in 2007, over 6.2 million people visited the festival making it the largest fair in the world. Nearly 7,000,000 liters were consumed in 2007. Yes, that isn’t a typo…almost seven million liters. Apparently the price of beer has gone up a bit this year. Take your pick between Augustiner, Paulaner, Spaten-Franziskaner, Schottenhammel, Löwenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr and Hofbräu with a Maß (1L) setting you back between €8.30 – €8.60.

Ohh, I wish I were there!!!

Mers found some great photos from this years festival. Head over to The Big Picture to see them.

FINISHED (Again): DIY Project: Computer Controlled HERMS (Update)

I had forgot about the temperature sensors, so I ordered a few more plugs and wired them up. It should be really easy to get everything setup now. Aside from the power cords, everything else (sensors, valves) are all connected via these plugs. Ya, things are a little mismatched, but overall I’m pretty happy with it. Now I need to get brewing!!!
