Sending brewing kit by courier
  • Has anyone here sent brewing kit by courier? I'm talking about a whole AG kit, 70qt mash tun, 15 gall kettle, fermenters etc... Is it possible to send stuff that bulky by courier? If so how is it done?
  • I bought a mashtun from a fella named 'Kevin' years ago. Anyways, it was like 5k to send and they just slapped a sticker to the side of it! Nothing more. Not sure if this helps but shipping out here feels a bit more casual.

  • Hmmm ok, does anyone know how you arrange to send stuff? Who do you use for the store Rob?
  • I looked into a complete home brew kit from Northern Brewer in Minnesota and that was several hundred bucks, so the shipping on the items you listed would be ridiculous. Having an army buddy with an APO would help, but otherwise I wouldn't have any notions on a decent shipping rate.
  • This is within Korea. Thanks all the same.
  • The post office will do it. That's your best bet.

  • Sounds pretty big for the post office, of course I know nothing about their policies and this is Korea.

I do know that I had a 10 gallon pot, 2 kegs, and a 5# CO2 bottle sent from Seoul, Jungang keg guy (RIP), by Taekbae, a Korean package service, they were not happy when they finally got it to my house. They told my wife that it should have been delivered by some other service because of it's size. If you can't use the post office then have someone that speaks Korean call Taekbae, tell them the size and they should point you in the right direction. Most Koreans seem to know the company/service.
  • Yeah it's definitely too big for the post office, the missus tried to send a key board with them the other day and they weren't having that, if they can't send that there's no way they're sending a massive cooler.
  • I agree with what Dadd said.

I think the PO got goofy with the keyboard because they saw potential for damaging it during shipping. I sent a computer monitor, albeit a very well packed computer monitor, and they were very reluctant to do so. I insisted and they eventually sent it without issue.

If physical size is an issue, you could do several smaller packages. They cut you a postage break if everything goes to the same address. Postage is still MUCH cheaper than here it is back home.

  • The post office has a taekbae service....sorry, didn't clarify. It's obviously too much for one package, but split up it should be fine.

Another option are the convenience stores. They have taekbae services also.

Really? What's the difference? Now we are talking 'universe within a universe' sort of stuff!

  • That's what the wife said on further clairification. The guy was complaining that the package should have been split, it was too heavy. Taekbae is a service and that is what you are looking for. See what happens when you have a "Long Haired Dictionary."

I was reading on some expat site that the post office has boxes for flat rate shipping, they are much cheaper then the states and much faster, sometimes in just 1 day for either post office or taekbae.

I didn't know that the post office had a taekbae service but that is because the wife just makes a call and the guy shows up at my door in a few hours and takes the stuff. Great for me because I don't have to carry it anywhere.
  • Yeah, the Joongang Keg guy used to send even kegs and gas tanks etc. by taekbae, though that's illegal (and dangerous) for that kind of equipment -- but the Post Office taekbae can legally handle that stuff, if the contents are disclosed, so so I've been told.
  • Rob sent me a few kegs and a gigantic kettle via taekbae. It seemed to work just fine. The guy didn't complain a bit.
