Just got about 8 bottles of Hitachino. They have: White Ale, Espresso Stout, Ginger Ale, and Japanese Classic Ale. Range is from 7000-9000. The white ale is actually cheaper than it is in the states.
As far as I know, it's only at the Express Bus Terminal Shinsaegae right now.
1: White Ale--Nothing new to say here. This is one of my favorite beers ever. It's what Hoegaarden wishes it was. A round, refreshing White Ale that doesn't leave the tongue empty and alone like so many other white's do. Cardamom and orange peel are there, but not overpowering.
2: Classic Japanese Ale--this was the surprise. I'd never had this before and now I don't know how I can live without it. It's a traditional English IPA that's aged in Cedar Casks. It'd be a nice beer without the aging, but with it, there's a cedar-pepperiness that lingers in the nose and on the tip of the tongue. It takes a mild and citrusy IPA and turns it into something greater than the sum of its parts.
3: Real Ginger Ale--not a fan of this one. It's a sweet amber ale that's decent enough but the taste of ginger leaves my tongue board and wanting something else after a few sips. Something like Sushi. I would really...really like to try this with sushi.
These are also available at the Jukjeon Shinsaegae. Sipping on the white ale right now, pretty good! Also picked up the Boont amber and stout there as well.
What a change in the beer scene versus when I first arrived 9 years ago! The best part is that it's only going to get better!! Woohoo!

So I picked a bottle of the Japanese Classic Ale up. First rate! Hoppy and Cedary, a great pairing for spicy food or strong cigars. Gonna check out the Espresso stout next if it shows up at Shinsegae. Nice find!
I got the only three that were there. White Ale, Japanese Classic, and the Ginger. The White Ale was great. Very smooth. Far better than the Hoegaarden people compare it to. Unfortunately, there was no Espresso Stout in sight.
I stopped by the Shinsegae near Myeongdong and they had the white, classic Japanese, ginger ale, and espresso stout. They also had Indica, Boont Amber, and great white. I can't wait to try the stout and classic. They were kinda pricey, but the India was only W5,500, I guess I'll have to swing by and pickup a six'er or something.
Funny, we picked up the Wit, Stout, and Japanese ale in Jeonju on the way out of town but I was not that impressed with the first two. (Jihyun liked the Wit okay, but not so much the stout.) Trying the last one tonight, but I don't have high hopes. Maybe they got too warm in my bag on the way home... or maybe they're just not for us? I dunno. I was more excited to find those nice, flavored ginger ales are available at my local Homeplus, to be honest...
I found all but the Japanese Ale at a Homeplus in Jeonju, of all places, though I didn't care for any too much. (The White ale was the best of the ones I tried.) I will look for the cedary one, though...
Hmmm.... if I remember right, it was somewhere near the 역... we picked it up on the way out of town. (We only had Emart -- and the (then) brand new Shinsaegae Dept. Store -- back when I lived in Jeonju, so the location isn't clear in my head, but I half-believe it was just a few blocks away from the train station, actually.)
