Grain Mill Help
  • Anyone in the Itaewon/HBC area have a grain mill that I could run 5kg of pilsner through? Doing a partial mash IPA this weekend and unmilled grain is the only obstacle in my way. More than happy to share the finished batch with anyone who can help.

Looking at ordering a mill from the states soon, so do most of you AG guys have your own mills shipped over for personal use? If so what brand/recommendations? Does anyone know of where to get a good mill in Korea? I've read that some of you guys go to the local grain shops and have it done there. Any of these in the Itaewon area?
  • Shipping mills here costs a lot. You can do it but it will save a lot of cash if you can get someone to carry it over in their luggage or carry on. I bought a crankenstein with the optional handle, for around 115 US, and I love it. Easy to adjust, tough as nails and crushes well. My friends bought an old school corona mill here, and while it aint the best it does its job. After a little adjustment that is. You can get it here: http://www.beerschool.co.kr/front/php/product.php?product_no=23&main_cate_no=28&display_group=1

You can ask the local Ddeokk miller to crush your grain for a few bucks. I never have, but I did see they have adjustable crushers at the one by my school, so it stands to reason a lot of them could do it.
  • Maybe hit up Magpie brewing (The Beer Store) in Itaewon? They have a nice mill that you might be able to use.
  • In my town, the ddeok people absolutely refuse to crush anything but rice... but the folks who do the red peppers and sesame seeds are sometimes willing to do it. I've never had any bad effects from residual sesame seed oil or peppers, mainly I think because the seeds had already had the oil extracted as much as possible.

But I love having a mill: it's SO much easier to just get the drill and grind the grain when you want to do the brewing, and it's all ready to go a few minutes later!
