stuck dip tube
  • Any hints for getting the long dip tubes out of kegs? They've been soaking in hot water for a bit but won't budge. The gas ones came out after a bit but the long ones are having none of it.
  • Won't budge at all?? Strange. It should easily pull out. Maybe reach into the keg and try to push it up and out? Not sure what else to do as I've never had that problem and can't really imagine how it would get stuck so well. The only part where the dip tube touches the keg is at the top (take off the post and it should just pull out). I wouldn't use pliers or the like on them as you dont want them bent. I guess the o-rings are just gummed right up and are holding the posts there??

  • Yeah, I think it's the old o-rings that are causing the problems, although the kegs had beer in before and it still shouldn't have touched those o-rings. I tried giving them a good shove from inside and it looked like it was thinking about moving and then thought "nah fuck it". I tried pulling it out with my finger nails and the outer part of the o-ring just shredded right off, but I'm thinking there is some rubber jammed in there. It's now impossible to get that one airtight. The other keg, I didn't try too hard with- changed all the other o-rings and will worry about the one on the dip tube when it fails. That's airtight for now but the o-ring on the liquid in dip tube is shredded up pretty good. Seems odd that you've never had this problem, and there is no talk about it happening on the intertron, and then I go and get two kegs with the same problem.

iIt seems as if the old o-rings melted a little bit and formed a seal between the dip tube and the hole.
  • Got that sucker out!

I soaked it for about an hour in 3 litres of boiling water and then reached right in to the bottom. I gripped it below the elbow and twisted and pulled at the same time and it came out pretty easily. There were some remnants of o-ring stuck to the outside of the dip tube, but I think the major problem was that the dip tube was at a funny angle: the elbow was pointing almost beyond the gas in dip tube. It's airtight now and just begging to be filled.
  • Good job! I've never seen one that tight. Must have been an old o ring.
  • Stuck dip tube......chuckle, chuckle, chuckle.....I wish I could get mine stuck more frequently!!! LOL But all that aside, next time try a small flat head screw driver and gently pry evenly all the way around the dip tube. The o-ring is already bad anyhow so your not going to hurt it. Just be careful of the flange. Pry left and right in a twisting motion instead of up and down. Then when it's out clean the hell out of it! Also make sure the dip tube isn't previously damaged. Sometimes they are and people don't know when they assemble them the last time.
