Binggrae Milk Refrigerator Kegerator
  • Howdy! I'm new to the group and thought I'd throw up some photos of my new kegerator. It is a fairly old Binggrae milk refrigerator, of the variety that can be found at any old school mart. It was purchased for 170,000 delivered after talking the lady down from 200,000. The top of the fridge didn't reveal any coolant lines after a corn starch test (the cooling is taken care of by a half moon shaped coil inside sheet metal on the inside of the fridge that arcs upwards towards the top), so installing the double tap was a simple matter of finding the middle of the top, drilling the hole, sticking the tap on top, and slapping in the screws. It works extremely well and can fit four, five gallon kegs and a small bottle of CO2. The bonus is that the light above the glass doors still works, so my friends and I can get together for a semi-authentic "mart night." Cheers!

  • After just wrestling keg #2 into my smaller, just-finished kegerator, I am now envying the cleverness of this setup... looks like you have room for at least four or five kegs in there, man! Would be very useful for carbing and conditioning them at the right temp, while you wait to enjoy them...
  • Sweet kegerator! I love all the space you have in it.

  • I love it! I'm already getting tired of only having space for 2 kegs. I would like to do a keezer build one of these days and be able to fit 5 kegs in there for conditioning or whatever.
  • Thanks guys! What is also good about having this thing is that depending on how you fit the kegs, you can actually install one of the half-shelves to hold glasses. The downside of this is that when it runs it is noisier than a regular refrigerator. Not by a bunch, but enough to annoy you before you get used to it.

When that compressor winds down that bitch kicks like a diesel! Nah, it's not that loud but it ain't a Frigidaire either. :)

  • I fucked up my old kegerator a while ago and finally picked up a new one yesterday....I went the same route. I love all the space in it!

  • Rob... about how much would this cost to make?
  • Fridge is 130,000 - 150,000won and I think the tap is around $100. Then 10 minutes to cut a whole and screw things down and done.

  • That's pretty cheap. I have 110 power... guess I'd need a transformer too. Where'd you buy the fridge... near the Junggong Keg guy?
  • That's gorgeous, Rob! That's looks to be next to your sink and that's where people traditionally put their food fridge. Did you give up food for beer? If so, congrats!

  • Yep. I got it from a shop down the alley from Joongang Keg.

Garrett, havent completely given up on food yet so still rockin the food fridge as well. We don't have a kimchi fridge, so the Kegerator fits perfectly into that space. Beer is WAY more important than kimchi!!!

  • These look amazing! Were the taps ordered from abroad? I assume so with the dollar price given. Anyways, one of these would look great in any home or office. Well done, gentlemen!
  • Was looking at a normal fridge today, but think these display ones are best. Are taps available locally, or do they need to be shipped over?
  • Mangy,
I've had about every type of kegerator a guy could have (minus root cellar kegerator but that's next). My favorite is definitely the milk fridge kegerator. You do give up extra freezer capacity BUT my god is there a ton of floor space. I didn't want to molest the top of the fridge as it doubles as a counter top in our tiny kitchen. A fella just swings open the door and takes a draw off the cobra (picnic) tap if he wants a beer. It saves a bunch on shank related hardware and the fridge stay in tact. In total, I'm able to fit my six pin-lock kegs in there. You can see my tall Cass C02 tank (thanks Fred) to the right there. I was able to snake the c02 line through the gromet that the fridge hardware goes through.

If you go the milk fridge way, make sure you get one with a adjustable thermostat. Mine is a small dial in the upper left hand part of the photo. She keeps at about 8c this way. Without it, you'll be serving beer popsicles like Aaron is at 3c.

  • Garrett, that is beautiful! I agree that the floor space is the greatest feature of, and I like the sliding glass doors. I'm actually all set for temp control - I bought KMac's controller and Dadd put a Korean plug on it for me, but if there's one with an adjuster available I'll still take it. That leads me to another question, is the interior of the fridge high to fit a 23L carboy? 65cm, give or take, is needed. I'm not kegging yet so my primary reason at the moment for fermenting during the summer.
  • Where in Seoul can we find markets that sell these kinds of fridges?
  • Bump.

Summer is coming. Hopefully I can snag a fridge this year for fermentation purposes. Not kegging quite yet...
  • There is a used appliance store in the main alley between Magpie and Craftworks, that's where I got mine, they deliver too.  I also found them near Jungno, by the old Jungno keg guy.
  • Also worth mentioning is that the doors pop off easily to allow for easy cleaning and keg/fermenter movement.

  • Bryan....whats the going rate for the fridges?
  • Mine was 220,000w shipped.  I pretty much had only this one to choose from too.  Seems they are becoming bit of a rare beast.  If you want some dimensions and such, just let me know.

  • Garrett dimensions would great. Whats the Korean word for this style fridge?

    Was yours bought locally?
  • I think mine was W200,000 or W250,000 plus W25,000 delivery fee, I'm not sure I got it a few years ago, Its the standup skinny Samsung model, not the Binggrae fridge you are all discussing.  http://www.homebrewkorea.com/?page_id=1723#/discussion/449/my-keggerator-part-duex
  • Mine was only 130,000won, plus shipping.  Unfortunately mine has recently died.  I think it has sprung a leak and lost all the refrigerant, but hopefully that can easily be fixed.  Head to the Joonang Market in Seoul if you live in the general area....Lots of fridges and deals to be had.

  • Ok thanks guys. I'm not in the general area but just want an idea for prices. Cheers!
  • My rig has internal dimensions of 43 inches wide by 30 inches tall. My pinlock kegs w/ attached disconnect are a bit over 24 inches in height. Would easily accommodate the taller, slimmer ball lock kegs. I am BARELY able to fit 6 kegs in there and have 50% function of the sliding doors. It has to be exactly right. Sometimes I can't figure out the exact placement of the kegs and it becomes to feel like Tetris.

  • Cheers, Garrett. Could I have the external dimensions when you have a chance? Need to find space to put one.
  • It's a perfect square at 47 inches by 47 inches.  I noticed that everyone's seems to be a bit different.  The best thing to do if head down to the district with all the fridges and bring a keg to see first-hand.  (you don't have them yet BUT don't buy one without knowing whether or not a keg will fit).

  • Garrett sorry man but what is the depth of the fridge? Spaces in my place are narrow.

    Cheers.
  • It's 20.5 inches deep.
