Brew Dog high-alc beers...beer or whisky?

Postby jdog2050 » Fri Jul 23, 2010 11:20 pm

So I saw the link that Rob posted earlier on Reddit.com, and a lot of people were making the point that what Brew dog is producing really just isn't beer anymore. It's just freeze-distilled, hop-flavored whisky. I'd have to agree. It seems to me that the end-game of beer is probably Samuel Adam's Utopia. Sure they use some gimmickry, but the high alc is still mostly coming from the yeast. Freezing the beer really is just a form of distillation. I applaud these guys for being extreme, but I don't think you can call their high-alc products beer.

It is pretty fascinating, but only in a freak show kinda way...I don't know that I'd ever be interested in drinking it. Utopia, on the other hand...that's a thing of beauty!

I like beer AND whiskey, so I don't really care.

The End of History, made by BrewDog of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, has 55% alcohol content and is £500 a bottle. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-10725024 Interesting bottles.
